Amazon Fire HD 8 Review How Does It Perform for Business
Amazon Fire HD 8 Review How Does It Perform for geschftliches miteinanderAmazons Fire HD 8 flachrechner is a versatile tablet at the right price, but it has some key limitations. / Credit Jeremy Lips Amazons Fire HD 8 tablet is a versatile tablet at the right price, but it has some key limitations. First among them is that it welchesnt designed for business use. But the $90 slate is nicer than its dirt-cheap price tag might suggest, giving you a bright 8-inch display, long battery life and enough performance for basic on-the-go productivity.Amazons app selection isnt as good as what youll find on other Android tablets, so you cant install productivity staples like Google Docs or Microsofts Office apps. Otherwise, the Fire HD 8 is a surprisingly capable device for workers who want something that has a bit more screen space than their smartphones can provide.DesignDont be alarmed by the bright orange backing of the Fire HD 8 featured in these photos the tab let also comes in a more modest black iteration, as well as blue and magenta. Personally, I like the orange, since it makes the slate so easy to spot in a cluttered office.Whatever color you plektron, you probably wont think twice about covering the tablet up with a protective case. The slates plastic design isnt fancy, but it feels sturdy and solid. Id expect the plastic back to garner lots of scratches over time, though.Cheap tablets tend to be chunky and heavy, but the Fire HD 8 is relatively svelte. The device weighs 12 ounces and measures 0.4 inches thick, making it lighter but just as thin as its closest rival, Lenovos $150 https//www.businessnewsdaily.com (17.6 ounces, 0.4 inches thick). Compared to a premium slate such as the iPad mini 4, which weighs about 10 ounces and is 0.3 inches thick, the Fire HD 8 is downright skinny. On the tablets right edge, youll find a microSD card, which can expand the systems modest 16GB of storage by up to 200GB, for a total of 216GB.AppsThe v ast majority of Android smartphones and tablets give you full access to Google Play, which is the official store for Android apps. Not so on Amazons Fire tablets, which instead restrict you to Amazons own app store. And theres a big difference between the two The Amazon app store offers a selection of 600,000 apps, which is a fraction of the 2.2 million youll find on Google Play. While Amazon has a majority of the most popular hauptrichtung apps Instagram, Spotify and Netflix are here there are plenty of exceptions that workers are likely to notice. Full-featured versions of Microsofts Word, Excel and PowerPoint are available on iPads and other Android slates, but Amazons tablet simply doesnt offer these programs to download. Likewise, Googles productivity suite which includes Docs, Sheets and Slides isnt available for download on the Fire HD 8. That also means you may not be able to get other proprietary apps to load. The slate does come with Amazons own apps for creating and edi ting documents, spreadsheets and presentations. But the apps limit you to uploading your content to Amazons own cloud drive. If you use Microsoft Office 365 at work, you might run into some compatibility issues. There is a work-around if you absolutely must run Microsoft Office apps on your Fire HD 8 it involves downloading the app files from a third-party side, then side-loading them onto your device. The process requires a bit of technical know-how, though, and since it can potentially leave you vulnerable to malware by installing the wrong files, we dont recommend it. Workers who cant verstndigung im strafverfahren with Amazons native app selection should buy a different tablet. You can also use Microsoft or Googles productivity apps by accessing the web versions in Amazons Silk browser. Those versions dont have all the features youll find in the stand-alone apps, but its a decent option if you need them.Otherwise, the Fire HD 8 comes preloaded with most of the apps youll need for everyday productivity. The stock email app makes it easy to set up your email account, including Microsoft Exchange email accounts. And the stock calendar makes it easy to add meetings and reminders with a few taps.Despite the relatively limited selection, there are still hundreds of worthwhile productivity apps on the Amazon App store. Some of my favorites are Microsofts OneNote for jotting down notes and AM Appointment Manager for scheduling your workday.Fortunately, theres an easy way to scout out Amazons app selection before you buy the Fire HD 8. Just browse the companys online app store to see whats available.DisplayThe Fire HD 8s 8-inch, 1280 x 800-pixel panel is well-suited for basic productivity, but it can feel cramped for screen-intensive tasks. The sub-1080p panel doesnt offer full-HD resolution, so viewing large documents and spreadsheets can feel a bit claustrophobic. For example, in the included spreadsheet editor, the apps UI takes up more space on screen than Id lik e.The Fire HD 8 is a decent device for catching up on your Netflix queue after work. The display is bright and sharp enough for an 8-inch tablet, but color quality could be better. When watching the HD trailer for HBOs Westworld, I could make out detail in flying dust motes, though the red and orange colors in a sweeping desert vista looked muted.InterfaceThe Fire HD welches designed primarily for entertainment, not work, and it shows. The tablet actually runs on a customized version of Android called Fire OS, which puts the focus on media consumption instead of creation. From the main screen, you can swipe through a variety of panels that give you quick access to the videos, music, games and books that youve purchased through Amazon. Too bad theres not a panel that lets you jump straight to your most recently edited documents. Its easy enough to ignore that stuff, though, and open favorite productivity apps from the home screen. This shows all apps that are currently installed.Other wise, the interface will be familiar to anyone who has ever used an Android device. It includes many features from the most recent versions of the operating system, including natel system functions that can be accessed by swiping down from the top of the screen. You can adjust your screen brightness and toggle Wi-Fi or Do Not Disturb mode, for example, without much fuss.Battery lifeYou can feel comfortable leaving the Fire HD 8s charging cable at home. The tablet lasts and lasts, running for an impressive 11 hours and 19 minutes on our battery test, which simulates continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi. That blows away the tablet average of 858, and ensures that the slate will run through the end of your longest business flight.VideoconferencingA front-facing camera is located just above the slates display, and it will come in handy for workers who want to meet remotely with clients or colleagues via software such as Skype. The 0.3-MP camera doesnt pick up much detail, though images lo ok grainy, blurry and dark, especially in low light.SecurityTheres no fancy fingerprint scanner available on the Fire HD 8, but you do get the typical lineup of security options available on every other Android tablet. That includes the ability to set a lock screen password and native VPN support. You can also encrypt your files so they can be accessed only by users who know the assigned PIN.Virtual assistantThe Fire HD 8 has been touted in advertising as the first Amazon slate to come preloaded with Alexa , Amazons virtual assistant service and the companys answer to Siri on the iPhone and Google Assistant on stock Android. Unfortunately, the tablet shipped before Alexa was ready to roll out on the device. The feature is now expected to launch sometime before the end of the year.Read More Amazons Alexa May be the Next Essential Business ToolWhen Alexa becomes available, it will be a nice productivity booster on the Fire HD 8. The voice-command-based service can streamline all sorts of tasks, including setting reminders, adding appointments to your calendar, fetching turn-by-turn driving directions, delivering weather reports and more. But workers who want to take advantage of Alexa will have to wait a while.PerformanceDue to their sluggish performance, older Amazon Fire tablets couldnt pass muster as work slates. The Fire HD 8 bucks that trend, with more than enough power for basic productivity tasks like editing documents, checking email and browsing the web. The slate comes equipped with a 1.3-GHz processor and 1.5GB of RAM, which was enough to let me switch between apps quickly with only the occasional stutter. The Fire HD 8 still lags behind the competition on benchmark tests, though. It racked up a score of 1,929 on the Geekbench 3 test, which measures overall performance, trailing both the Lenovo Tab 2 A10 (2,371) and the overall tablet average (2,833).ConfigurationsAmazon sells the Fire HD 8 in two very similar hardware configurations. The entry-level m odel provides 16GB of internal storage for $90, while a pricier model gives you 32GB for $120. Theres also the option to pay $15 extra to remove advertisements that appear on the slates lock screen. The ads arent too obtrusive, though, and they help subsidize the tablets low cost.Bottom lineIf youre looking for a reasonably capable tablet that will fit any budget, Amazons Fire HD 8 Tablet might be it. The 8-inch slate boasts long battery life and decent performance in a supremely affordable package. But Amazons tablet wasnt designed for business use. The slates biggest downside is its limited app library, which is missing such key offerings as Microsoft Word and Excel. Other than that, you get what you pay for decent (but not fast) performance, a bright (but dull) display and a plastic design that feels sturdy but probably isnt as durable as what you get with a pricier tablet. Despite those limitations, this $90 slate is hard to beat for the price. This Wearable Tech Company is Trying to Close the Industrys Gender Gap
This Wearable Tech Company is Trying to Close the Industrys Gender Gap Michelle Hua and Marija Butkovic, who founded Women of Wearables (heidewitzka), a wearable tech company, have not had the fruchtwein linear careers -- but their paths have aligned in the best of ways. Both women are lawyers-turned-entrepreneurs and were working in the wearable tech company for a few years before joining forces. They founded WoW in 2016 with the goal of encuraging more women and diverse kollektivs to participate in building hardware and software products as designers, product managers, and developers - or to be founders of their own companies. We found a lack of women and diverse teams in this industry, which is the very reason we co-founded Women of Wearables, Hua and Butkovic explain. Without female role models, it is difficult for women to be what they cant see. We need more role models, which is exactly what WoW tries to do give unterstellung amazing women visibility and recognition.During a r ecent chat, Hua and Butkovic shared with us the obstacles theyve faced in reaching their mission, how their company has grown, and how theyre encouraging girls and young women to explore careers in STEM fields.Fairygodboss Whats one of the biggest challenges WoW has faced in achieving its mission? How have you gone about overcoming this obstacle?Michelle Hua and Marija ButkovicFirst and foremost there is a lack of female role models in the wearable tech industry. This gender imbalance makes it more difficult for women to enter and remain in the wearables industry because it is male-dominated.Secondly, finding technical teams. Some female founders dont have a technical background but they have a technical solution. With wearables being a new industry, it is also challenging for female founders operating in this space to be rckendeckunged if they arent based in a major city with physical access to support networks. There has also been a surge of wearable products designed by men, for me n. Wearable tech teams are very often run by men they hire male designers and developers, and implement technology that is most appealing to men. What this means is that ultimately you have products appealing to men, not women, and this way youre not addressing huge chunk of your potential customers. Although the market has moved toward a feminization of wearables in the past couple of years, there is still very little out there that takes female physiology or traditionally feminized activity into account in a serious way. Also, investors are men and they often dont understand womens mindset when it comes to building wearable products. Some of them even think those are just consumer products women are building as a hobby, rather than a proper business. Women make up 80% of the consumer market, so it makes sense for women to be designing products and services that they buy and use.FGB How has the company grown and developed?MH MBWe met through Adas list (a group for women in tech in L ondon, but also worldwide), in 2015. We were both ex-lawyers for years before quitting our jobs to start our own tech companies. At the Wearable Tech Show in 2016 we finally met in person and were inseparable for two days brainstorming and sharing our experiences in being in the wearable tech world. Thats how WoW was bornWe with no funding and have promoted WoW online and via word of mouth. Since our very first How She Did It event in London in October 2016 and our first workshops in Manchester in fall 2016, we have continued to grow with interest from women in wearables, fashion tech, internet of things and VR / AR for our wearable technology workshops. Our wearable tech workshops aim to bring together the local community to get parents and kids learning new skills and introduce them to the wearable tech industry, so they can walk away with something tangible. We currently have more than 500 women in our community, not only from the UK and Europe, but also from the US, Singemeinsame a grarpolitikore, Indonesia, Canada, and Japan. We are also very lucky to have Rachael Yeung in our team as our wearable tech assistant and STEM ambassador. She has been an asset to the team in designing and making projects. The team is growing and were now recruiting more members to help them build and grow WoW. We welcome anyone who wants to work with us we would like a diverse team, because diverse teams are more innovative and we can learn from one another. Men can of course join our team too, so long as they support our mission.FGB Why do you think women should know about your WoW/how can women benefit from what you do?MH MBWoW is an organization that not only addresses the issue of a lack of women in wearable tech industry, but also solves this very problem by inspiring, connecting and supporting them and then encouraging more women to enter this industry.WoW is building a community of women in wearable tech, fashion tech, IoT and VR/AR and connecting them with each other, offeri ng support, mentorship, workshops and visibility. So far, the interest has been overwhelming with women from more than 20 countries all around the world. Were cultivating a growing community of female founders, product and UX designers, developers, smart textile designers, executives and managers, as well as startups, industry partners, universities, accelerators and incubators, all in tech, wearable tech, fashion tech, IoT and VR/AR industries.WoW supports its growing community of women and girls in the tech space through monthly events, breakfasts and meetups in Manchester and London. We also deliver mentorship and workshops to girls between the ages of 10-18 to make their own wearable and e-textiles projects. This encourages more girls to enter the wearables industry by equipping them with the skills they need to reduce the gender gap in the wearables industry. It also shows them how intangible skills such as coding can be converted to making a tangible product that is wearable and uses e-textiles. Through this, WoW helps the gender and diversity gap that is apparent in these industries and encourages and inspires young girls to choose STEM subjects for a career.FGB What other companies that support women do you admire?MH MBWe have partnered with a range of companies that share our same mission and goals and who we love working with, such as Blooming Founders, FDisrupters, Next Tech Girls, Women of Silicon Roundabout, We Are The City and WoW Talks.Follow WoW Women_Wearables or contact the founders athellowomenofwearables.com.Fairygodboss is committed to improving the workplace and lives of women.Join us by reviewing your employer
